Photo Requirements

The UK ETA application includes a digital photograph of the applicant. The image is checked against UK Visas and Immigration biometric standards, so a compliant photo helps your application move through without delay.

What a good photo looks like

Photo standards

Recent and a true likeness

The photo must be taken recently and clearly show how you currently look. A photo that no longer resembles you can lead to a request for a new image.

Plain, light-coloured background

Use a plain cream or light grey background with no objects, patterns, or other people behind you. The background should be uniform with no shadows.

Full face, centred and visible

Face the camera directly with your whole face in clear view. Eyes open, mouth closed, with a neutral expression.

No head coverings (with exceptions)

Avoid hats or head coverings unless worn for religious or medical reasons, in which case your full face must still be visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.

No glare on glasses

If you wear glasses, your eyes must be clearly visible with no glare, reflection, or frames covering the eyes. Sunglasses or tinted lenses are not accepted.

Good, even lighting

The image should be in focus, well-lit, and free of red-eye. Avoid harsh shadows across the face or background.

What to avoid

  • Filters, beautification, or digital edits
  • Selfies taken at an angle
  • Other people or pets in frame
  • Low resolution or blurry images
  • Hair covering the eyes
  • Uneven or coloured lighting

Taking the photo on a phone

A modern smartphone camera is acceptable. Stand approximately an arm's length from a plain wall in good, natural light, have another person take the photo straight on at eye level, and ensure the whole head and the top of the shoulders are in frame.
