UK ETA Restrictions

An approved UK ETA permits short visits for a defined set of purposes. This page sets out what an ETA allows, what it does not, and the limits that apply to every visit.

What an ETA does and does not allow

Permitted

• Tourism and holidays
• Visiting family and friends
• Most short business activities, such as meetings
• Short study of up to six months
• Transit through the UK

Not permitted

• Employment with a UK employer, whether paid or unpaid, regardless of duration
• Long-term study beyond six months
• Settling or living in the UK
• Activities not permitted on a short visit

Length of stay and repeat visits

Each visit under an ETA can last up to six months, and the authorisation covers multiple trips during its two-year validity. The ETA is designed for genuine visits: travellers who use repeated back-to-back stays to live in the United Kingdom for extended periods can expect additional questions from UK Border Force, and entry can be refused at the border even with a valid ETA.

Study and business under an ETA

Short study is permitted: a course of up to six months at an accredited institution can be completed as a visitor. Business visitors can attend meetings, conferences, and interviews, negotiate and sign contracts, and carry out site visits. The line is drawn at employment: work for a UK employer, paid or unpaid, is not a visitor activity and requires a work visa.

If your plans change

An ETA cannot be converted into a visa from inside the United Kingdom. If your purpose changes to one the ETA does not cover, such as employment or long-term study, the correct visa must be obtained before you travel. See UK ETA vs UK Visa to check which route fits your plans.
